Senior Accountant
San José, Costa Rica
The Senior Accountant is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and effective internal controls. This role oversees daily accounting operations, manages statutory and tax obligations, supports financial planning and decision-making, and ensures the integrity of financial information while contributing to the organization’s financial sustainability and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accurate and timely financial records.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with IFRS and local regulatory requirements.
- Lead the month-end and year-end closing processes, including reconciliations and supporting documentation.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, intercompany transactions, and general ledger activities.
- Ensure compliance with tax regulations, including tax filings, electronic invoicing, VAT declarations, and statutory reporting.
- Coordinate payment processing, supplier payments, employee reimbursements, and banking transactions while ensuring compliance with internal approval processes.
- Coordinate internal and external audits by preparing supporting documentation and following up on audit findings.
- Prepare financial reports, forecasts, and analyses to support business and financial decision-making.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and applicable financial regulations.
- Support the consolidation of financial information across multiple entities when applicable.
- Assist with project accounting, budget monitoring, and cost allocation.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, systems, workflows, and internal controls.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support organizational planning and financial reporting.
- Provide technical guidance to accounting staff and external stakeholders when required.
- Maintain confidentiality and ensure the integrity of financial information.
- Perform other accounting and finance responsibilities assigned by management.
Requirements
- Licenciatura in Accounting.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Strong understanding of Costa Rican tax regulations and statutory reporting requirements.
- Strong experience with financial reporting, month-end and year-end close processes, audits, tax compliance, account reconciliations, and internal controls.
- Experience preparing statutory reports and coordinating external audits.
- Advanced experience with SAP or a similar ERP system.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Intermediate English proficiency.
- Experience in multinational organizations, NGOs, international organizations, or donor-funded environments is highly desirable.
