Reasons for job dissatisfaction and how to attack it

March 22th, 2024Possibly because of my professional activity, I keep this phrase in mind practically every week: “looking for a job is a job in itself.” Now, what I am very clear about is that, if we are able to organize this work, set small milestones and acquire certain habits, the results are much better.
When they start looking for work, many people move quickly and with little order. Others do just the opposite: they are not sure how to start and end up falling into “paralysis.” Based on my experience accompanying hundreds of people in their search for a new job, I believe that to be successful it is always necessary to analyze different areas:
Feel good. If I am not physically and emotionally well, I will hardly be able to find a new job alternative. And I can do a lot to achieve it. We all have small actions and activities in mind that make us feel good or not. There are people for whom going to the movies, walking with their partner, going to the gym or interacting with tremendously positive people does them a lot of good. If so, let's think about it and establish a series of routines in our weekly agenda. Your body and mind will thank you very much.
Be clear about what I offer and want. This is something that we are not always clear about and that is convenient to analyze. In this blog we have insisted a lot on this topic. To the extent that I am able to ground it in activities that I can include in my weekly routines, I will be able to advance and progress. Can't you think of any? Think about it a little. You can put in writing the positions, responsibilities and functions performed or what made you happy (and what did not) in your last job, position, boss or company. You can also ask others about your weaknesses and strengths or analyze 10 job offers and see what “brings you closer” and what “pulls you away.” If you dedicate some time to it, you will see that you can come up with many ideas.
Know the market. If and only if we master “where we want to go” will we be able to exponentially increase our chances of success. I am referring to information regarding companies, sectors, positions or “geographical” places where I want to reside or work. Landing this in routines is relatively simple. From reading the specialized press, analyzing job portals, databases or even meeting 3 people every week and asking for opinions on a specific topic. Of course, to truly master what is happening out there you have to dedicate many hours, either to analyze information that is “two clicks away” or to share qualitative information with the dozens of people we have at our disposal. Doing this really well is “hour-intensive” work. Let's organize our weekly agenda well and acquire healthy routines.
Develop new skills. It is not enough to be a good professional, I have to be perceived as such, whether in any type of communication (oral or written) and especially in a “face to face” situation. These are skills that we all, with greater or lesser effort, can develop. To do this, we can think about what actions we can do week by week that help us develop and be better at “the job of looking for work.” Surely activities such as practicing a job interview, recording my presentation message on video and reviewing it, analyzing five good resumes and incorporating improvements in your own, spending time improving languages, etc., can be good ideas that, properly planned, contribute to put order and a certain systematization to my weekly activity.
And please, keep in mind that searching for a new job is a process through which we must move forward. If you want to progress slowly but surely, I think it is highly recommended that:
- Set intermediate milestones and identify actions that are useful to you.
- Find a way to acquire new habits, new routines.
- As far as possible, use tools that help you put your commitments in writing, allow you to organize and learn from what you have experienced.
To specify, structure and shape your action plan, I always think it is highly recommended that each person use those tools with which they feel most comfortable. An electronic diary can be as useful as a good pen and good paper. The important thing is to stop and think, organize your ideas, set some routines and put them into practice. As always happens, this last one is possibly the most complicated (day-to-day discipline), but believe me, those who carry it out (I have seen it with my own eyes) have much better results.
